Port Washington Superintendent Shares Thoughts on Governor's Review of Common Core

Here's what she had to say.

Port Washington Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kathleen A. Mooney expressed her thoughts upon learning that Gov. Andrew Cuomo was finally listening to the concerns expressed by boards of education, school superintendents, educators and parents since the Common Core Learning Standards came out.

Although Cuomo’s decision to call for a review of the state’s Common Core curriculum and student assessments was positive news, he did not initially use student assessment data as a component to evaluate teacher performance, also known as APPR.

“Part of the problem is that education leaders were never included in the original discussions and planning,” Mooney said in a statement. “School superintendents must be included as this new evaluation gets underway, since we are the ones who must lead the successful implementation of any new reforms.”

Mooney also said she was concerned about Cuomo’s announcement not including a review of APPR or to include district superintendents in the review process.

“I am pleased to see that these issues are finally being reviewed, but it is essential that APPR be part of that process,” Mooney said.
