Port Washington Water District Begins Construction of New Beacon Hill Water Tower

The Port Washington Water District (PWWD) has commenced work on the construction site for the new Beacon Hill water tower. The new water tower will replace the existing water tower that was built in the 1930’s and had reached the end of its useful life. Over the next couple of weeks, the District’s engineering and construction team will begin prepping the site for the estimated nine-month construction project. Dismantling of the existing tank is expected to begin on September 5, 2017.

“We are committed to keeping the community well informed about each step of this process,” said David Brackett, Chairman of the Port Washington Water District. “We know this project will cause some inconveniences for those who live near the construction site, but we will do everything we can to ensure this project runs smoothly with as little disruption as possible. We are fortunate to have residents who understand the need for replacing this vital piece of infrastructure and its importance to our water supply and distribution system.”

As part of easing the burden on residents adjacent to the construction site, the District has coordinated construction schedules with the local police precinct to mitigate traffic issues during road closures. The District has also coordinated with the Port Washington School District to ensure bus schedules will not be disrupted. In addition, residents most impacted by the construction have been provided with access to a point-of-contact, on call 24/7, who will be able to address concerns if and when presented.

“This is a major infrastructure project with a lot of moving pieces that will have varying levels of interruption to residents’ daily routines,” said Port Washington Water District Commissioner Peter Meyer. “We encourage any resident with special circumstances who is affected by either the construction or road closures to contact us so we can appropriately address their needs or concerns.”

Construction of the Beacon Hill water tower is only permitted Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Weekend and holiday work is strictly prohibited.
