Port Washington Water District Tell Residents How to Prepare for the Winter

Now is the time to begin preparing for the onslaught of the season, including preparation of water pipes !

There is no denying it: winter is drawing near. We once again face the harsh reality of the cold, bitter weather that lie ahead. Now is the time to begin preparing for the onslaught of the season, including preparation of water pipes. The Port Washington Water District provides some excellent tips:

Indoor Maintenance Before Colder Weather Arrives

If water service is in the boiler room or basement, check area for broken windows or drafts. Brisk winds and freezing temperatures can cause pipes and water meters to freeze or break. Locate main shutoff valve for emergency use. Make sure pipes in unheated areas, such as crawl spaces, are properly insulated.

Outdoor Water System

Be sure to drain outside faucets and turn off outside water to prevent freezing and breaks. Check your water meter pit cover to assure that it is securely bolted down and that the cover is intact.
