Prostate Awareness Month in North Hempstead

A nonprofit that administers free prostate cancer screenings in New Hyde Park, Port Washington and Westbury was recognized.

Town of North Hempstead recently honored a local nonprofit that offers free prostate cancer screening throughout Long Island in recognition of Prostate Cancer Awareness Month.

Integrated Medical Foundation, Inc. administers the screenings in New Hyde Park, Port Washington and Westbury. The nonprofit also has local support groups in New Hyde Park and works with the Town’s Project Independence program on educational programs about prostate cancer.

According to the Integrated Medical Foundation, one in seven men will have prostate cancer in their lifetime. Statistics show that regular screenings can lead to early detection of prostate cancer. IMF says their screenings have helped decrease the rate of prostate cancer deaths by nearly 40 percent since they began 20 years ago.
