Recycle Pollutants, Household Items At N. Hempstead S.T.O.P. Event
The program provides a safe and environmentally-friendly way to dispose of household hazardous waste. See the full list of what's accepted.

Residents are invited to empty out their houses of unwanted pollutants, clothing items, personal documents and more and bring these items to the upcoming S.T.O.P. (Stop Throwing Out Pollutants) event this weekend.
The event will be held 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 8 and Sunday, April 9 at North Hempstead Beach Park in Port Washington from 9:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
"The Town is proud to be able to continue to offer a convenient and environmentally responsible way for our residents to dispose of hazardous and sensitive waste,” Bosworth said in a press release.

Accepted items include:
- Aerosols
- Household Chemicals
- Pesticides
- Disinfectants
- Fertilizers
- Bulbs
- Thermostats
- Rechargeable and lithium batteries
- TVs
- Computers
- Oil-based paints only. Latex and water-based paints will not be accepted. Latex and water-based paints, once dried out (usually 24-36 hours after the lid is removed) can be placed in a trash bag and thrown out with your regular household garbage.
The Nassau County Police Department will no longer be accepting pharmaceuticals at S.T.O.P. events. Old medications can be dropped off at your local Nassau County Police Department Precinct.

The TONH is also partnering with Big Brothers Big Sisters, who will have a truck at the event collecting:
- Gently used and working clothes
- Stuffed animals
- Electronics
- Toys
- Sporting equipment
- Shoes
- Books
- Small area rugs
- Bikes
- Scooters
- Luggage
- Picture frames
- Table lamps
- Bolts of fabric
- Silverware
- Glassware
- Dishes
- Cosmetics
Each resident will receive a receipt for their donation for income tax purposes.
Residents will also have the chance to shred and dispose of personal documents, which will both reduce the risk of identity theft and help protect the environment. You can shred any personal documents and credit cards free of charge.
There is a limit of six “Bankers Box” sized bags of paper per car, per event. Commercial business documents including home offices will not be accepted.
The shredded documents will be send to pulping pills. The TONH reports every 2,000 pounds of paper recycled saves about 17 trees.
