Residents Forward Town Crier Mural Unveiled
The fourth in a series of beautiful murals that celebrates Port Washington's rich and long history was unveiled on Nov. 10.
On a beautiful fall Sunday afternoon, Residents Forward held an unveiling party to celebrate the completion of its fourth mural. Each of these four beautiful murals tells a story about a special and distinct part of what makes Port Washington so special. This latest “Town Crier” theme was designed to look a vintage newspaper featuring key events in Port’s rich history.
The Town Crier mural is the first design that was selected through a contest. The only direction to entrants was that design needed focus on Port Washington history. Diane Luger Moen’s design was chosen because the town crier concept presents the historical timeline in such an entertaining and appealing way. “Being a graphic artist, I thought, ‘what a better way to unfold the history of Port Washington than through the pages of a Town Crier,’” Luger Moen said. “Some of this history you may already be aware of, but my hope is that this mural will continue to educate our residents today as well as future generations to come.” Residents Forward Executive Director Mindy Germain added, “There are so many reasons to be proud of Port, but its incredibly deep and storied history is one of the most unique and 375 years long!”
Residents Forward is grateful to the mural’s Presenting Sponsors HEARTS (Helping Enrich the Arts in Port Washington), funded largely by Damon and Rachelle Gersh. “The arts are a reflection of who we are, where we come from and where we are going as a community. This mural project accomplishes that goal while adding an original creative asset that engenders community pride and recognition of the positive role the arts can play in our daily life,” stated HEARTS Founder Damon Gersh. “We’re proud to be a part of it and encourage others in the community to get involved and join us in supporting, promoting and enriching the arts in Port Washington.” Thanks also go to sponsors The Peter & Jeri Dejana Family Foundation, The Kreiger Family, The Brodsky Family and Cow Bay Contracting, along with Project Manager Michelle Shain, Designer Diane Luger Moen, Artist Jason Diaz of All American Painting and contributors The Baltimore Design Center, The Cow Neck Peninsula Historical Society and the Port Washington Public Library.
