Schreiber's Womens Empowerment Club Donation Generates Great Success!

Schreiber High School's Women's Empowerment Club held a fundraiser to donate feminine hygiene products in light of recent shortages.

In commemoration of Women's History month throughout the month of March Schreiber’s Women's Empowerment club came together to collect feminine hygiene products for those in need. Over the past year and a half, menstrual products across the country have experienced stock shortages and inflated prices. In fact, according to a statistic by the Alliance for Period Supplies, one in every four women are in “period poverty,” or are unable to purchase what they need for their menstrual cycle. The club saw what was happening around them and decided to do something about it. Their president, Lola Gitlin, explained “I had seen tons of articles all over social media and TV about how prices were rising in things that people couldn’t live without. In stores, feminine products were getting so much more expensive and they were even running out of products like tampons and pads. I immediately thought that if I can’t get them, then how are shelters, and families that struggle financially getting the resources they need. I brought the idea to the women’s empowerment club, and we got to work from there!”

The club teamed up with the school’s Social Studies Honor Society to promote their fundraiser. In the end, they raised hundreds of dollars worth of period products. Even people who aren’t typically involved in the clubs came together to donate for a cause.

All collected items were donated to the Our Lady of Fatima church. In a letter thanking the club, the church said this fundraiser has “helped to alleviate a burden for many women who may have had to choose not to purchase these items because they are often cost prohibitive.” Schreiber is extremely lucky to have a community that is so passionate about making a difference and should be extremely proud of themselves.
