Sid Jacobson JCC To Host MLK Day Of Service, Honoring His Legacy

EAST HILLS, NY — Sid Jacobson JCC will be hosting its annual MLK Day of Service in East Hills on Jan. 19. Those looking to provide hands-on community service can attend as a way of honoring the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Associate Executive Director of Community Engagement Susan Berman shared what this day means to her and the Sid Jacobson JCC.

"By bringing generations together, our MLK Day of Service shows that being an Upstander has no age limit," Berman said. "This day reflects what we strive to be at our Center for Community Engagement: engaged, compassionate, and committed to lifting one another up through meaningful service."

There will be projects, such as food and supply collections, meal packing, a community blood drive, a nationwide postcard-writing campaign that will support hunger relief, and educational projects that will teach children Dr. King's message.

Berman added, "Service doesn’t end on MLK Day. It begins there."

The Sid Jacobson JCC's goal is to support Long Islanders who are confronted with hunger, and the JCC has a food bank for those struggling. The Nikki Schwartz Memorial Community Needs Bank is their food pantry, and it also has other essential supplies.

The MLK Day of Service will take place from 10:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Sid Jacobson JCC in East Hills. More information can be found online.
