"Summer Together" Camp Scholarship Program Exceeds Goals!

New effort funded 57 Port children at local camps for one week and subsidized 19 family pool memberships

The volunteers and partner organizations who created “Summer Together” and “Swim Together” thank the Port Washington community for supporting these two first-time programs. Summer Together was formed to help 50 Port Washington children in need of economic assistance attend one week of local summer camp. Swim Together similarly sought to subsidize 10 family pool memberships.

We are happy to report that both programs exceeded our initial fundraising goals. Summer Together is funding 57 Port children at the following camps: Bach To Rock, Berest Dance Center, Camp Invention, Parent Resource Center, PYA/NY Baseball Academy and Unlimited Sports Action. And Swim Together is enabling 19 local families to enjoy our beautiful public pool with their neighbors at Manorhaven Park.

These programs were made possible through the joint efforts of aconsortium of community groups led by Long Island Together and The Community Synagogue Social Action Committee and including Temple Beth Israel Social Action Committee, Reconstructionist Synagogue of the North Shore, Port Together, St. Peter of Alcantara Social Ministry and Our Lady of Fatima Social Outreach

We thank the camps for their community spirit and patience in working with us on this new effort. We also thank the community organizations and individuals who helped us to identify campers and families including Sister Kathy at Our Lady of Fatima, Lourdes Taglialatela at St. Peter of Alcantara, Fran Powell and Peggy O’Hanlon at the PWPL, Trish Class and Diana Piza at the Parent Resource Center, and Lisa Miller and Lynette Batts at Littig House.

The Swim Together program could not have happened without the assistance of the Town of North Hempstead and Supervisor Judi Bosworth. We thank especially our Town Council Member Dina De Giorgio, as well as TONH Parks Commissioner Jill Weber and Parks staff member Jean Zappulla.

The Dolphin Bookshop, as always, was generous with its space for our fundraising concert last April, and Bach To Rock’s participation in the event was instrumental.

In all, a true community effort! Happy summer!
