VIDEO: Qualifying Gymnasts Reflect on Season
Schreiber gymnast qualified for Nassau County Championship.
Freshman Samantha Hoffman and Senior Jessica Medaglia were the first that head coach Melissa Havern sent to the Nassau County Individual Events Finals in gymnastics. Havern has been with the team for three years and has coached Medaglia for all three years and Hoffman for two years.
“It’s very exciting. We’re very proud of them,” Havern said.
The Nassau County Championship is very exclusive. There are 20 teams in the league that average 15 gymnasts each. Each gymnast competes individually and their top four scores are averaged together and they must have the qualifying score.

Both Schreiber athletes made it as far as the qualifying rounds for vault and uneven bars earlier in February.
“Beacause it is so highly selective we’re just happy they make it in," Havern said prior to the event. "Regardless of how they finish, we’re just happy they get there.”

She added, “This is our first year so this was extra special and we hope to continue from now on representing Port in the Nassau County Championship."
