More news on the Schreiber Viking wrestling front.
The team finished yet another strong season under the guidance of long time head coach Anthony Schettino and his staff. After completing a 15-4 season that saw nine All-Conference wrestlers, including returning Conference Champion and All-County wrestler Christian Castillo, the team earned more post-season accolades.
The Viking Wrestlers earned the distinction of being named a NYS Scholar Athlete Team, and Coach Schettino was named Nassau County Conference One Coach of the Year. Not long after earning these awards, assistant coach Chris Cardella was named the 2012 USA Veteran Nationals Champion in freestyle wrestling after winning his weight class in Tucson, Arizona. The coaches' motto: “where there’s hard work and dedication, success will follow” and that is apparent by the success of this program.

“The outstanding effort and quality of the youth level program through the PYA with Coaches; Moschos, Dover, Castillo and Ruggerello has been outstanding," Schettino said. "It starts at the bottom with a feeder program and PYA happens to be an excellent program that combines great coaching and a lot of fun for our wrestlers and that’s a winning combination.”
With the summer ahead the Viking Wrestlers and coaches will continue to move the sport forward by running and attending open mats two nights per week, wrestling in freestyle and Greco tournaments as well as attending weight training and conditioning programs. A good number of Port wrestlers are additionally preparing to attend one of the nation’s top team camps at Lehigh University as well as Advantage Wrestling Camp, a local world class camp that includes both NCAA Champions and college and Olympic level coaches run by Coach Schettino in July.
