Winter Sailing is Both Invigorating and Tranquil
Most sailors in the northeast put their boats in dry dock during the winter, but a handful of diehard sailors look forward to winter sailing

Who are those hardy seamen seen alone on Manhasset Bay sailing all winter long? Well, they are members of the oldest sailing club on the Long Island Sound—the North Shore Yacht Club, which prides itself on having members who are true sailors.
While the great majority of sailors in the northeast put their boats into dry dock till the spring, this handful of diehard sailors take advantage of the frequently windy winter days. So far, this winter has provided three out of five days of average wind speeds of 12-20 mph. These are the winds sailors dream of during hot summer days.
So what if it’s a little colder! That’s why winter clothes were invented, as all skiers know. Our group loves to sail in these fabulous and invigorating conditions. With no other boats on the water, the natural beauty of the sea, air and sky surrounds us in peaceful serenity. The only thing that stops us from sailing in winter is a rare lack of wind or frozen Manhasset Bay.

We know our boat is safe for winter sailing. Our dodger offers protection from the worst winter winds and breaking waves. A winter engine provides that added safety factor. My best advice for any wannabe winter sailor is to make sure your boat is prepared for heavy weather sailing, which includes reefing sails early to ensure you’re not overpowered in dangerous conditions. Be sure to wear plenty of warm clothes and never sail by yourself as you are on your own once you leave the dock.
It is hard to adequately convey the pleasure one gets from sailing between Manhasset Bay and City Island without any other sails in sight. The water is cleaner, the air is crisp and clear and the camaraderie is unbeatable.

Why are so many sailors reluctant to consider winter sailing? All that is required is a sailboat, an adventurous spirit and plenty of layers of warmth. Then, just relax and inhale the beauty of nature, the many moods of Long Island Sound and the joy of sharing your experience with fellow adventurers!
Established in 1871, the North Shore Yacht Club’s fleet consists almost exclusively of sailboats and a well-sheltered mooring area close to the Long Island Sound. Contact the Club at 516-883-9823 or info@nsyc.net for details.
