Working Together For a Cleaner Hempstead Harbor
Save the Date: Help Residents Forward clean up Hempstead Harbor on paddleboards, kayaks and along the shore on August 19
In June, Residents Forward’s PW Clean Waterways Initiative led dozens of volunteers on beaches and in the water on kayaks and paddleboards provided by Kostal Paddle to help clean up Manhasset Bay and Manorhaven Beach Park. On August 19, a second event also co-sponsored by Kostal Paddle will focus on Hempstead Harbor Beach Park and Hempstead Harbor. “We collected more than 100 pounds of debris from Manhasset Bay and Manorhaven Beach,” Residents Forward Executive Director Mindy Germain said. “Our hope with this program beyond keeping our waterways and beaches cleaner is to make more residents aware of how much garbage is disposed of carelessly so more people make an effort to properly dispose of trash.”
The PW Clean Waterways Initiative was created during last year’s Youth Climate Summit, which was organized and managed by Residents Forward. The teens that lead this and other environmentally focused programs are devoted to keeping our community and our planet ever cleaner and better. This project would not be possible without the support of Kostal Paddle.
Volunteers for the August 19 cleanup will meet at the Kostal Paddle shed, which is located in the middle of the beach so cars can be parked in lots at either Beach Park entrance. Please bring hats, sunscreen protective shoes that can get wet, drinking water and bug repellant. Residents Forward will provide latex gloves and trash bags. All ages are encouraged to come and help make a difference, but adults must accompany children under 12.
