Wrong-Way Drunken Driver Causes Head-On Crash at LIE Exit Ramp: Police
The 24-year-old woman was arrested Sunday morning, police say.
A 24-year-old woman was arrested for DWI after police say she drove the wrong way on a Long Island Expressway exit ramp Sunday morning in East Hills.
According to authorities, Ambar Chavez, of Hempstead, was operating a 2001 Mazda when she went the wrong way on the eastbound LIE Exit 38 ramp and collided head-on with a 2004 Lexus at 3:30 a.m.
Officers arrived to the scene to find the Mazda in the right lane with extensive front-end damage and the Lexus parked on the shoulder with severe front-end damage, police say.

The 51-year-old man driving the Lexus and a 42-year-old passenger complained of neck and back pain but refused medical attention at the scene, police say.
An investigation allegedly revealed Chavez was driving under the influence of an alcoholic beverage and she was placed under arrest. She was charged with DWI 1192.3, DWI 1192.2 and possession of marijuana.

She will be arraigned Sunday at First District Court in Hempstead.
