Trump Calls For NYPD To Let 'Trump 2020' Cop Back To Work

The president Tweeted on Tuesday that he stands 100% with the now-suspended cop who used a patrol car to yell "Trump 2020" in Brooklyn.

FLATBUSH, BROOKLYN — President Donald Trump is calling for the NYPD to let a Brooklyn cop who was suspended for yelling "Trump 2020" with his patrol car speaker back to work.

"Thank you to the most incredible people on earth. I stand with you 100%," the president Tweeted in a series of posts Tuesday linking to the Sergeants Benevolent Association. "Get that great Officer back to work!

The message of support was linked to a message the SBA wrote in response to the Flatbush incident, where the cop was caught on videosaying "Trump 2020" from the car loudspeaker at passersby.

The cop was suspended without pay within 24 hours given rules against endorsing a political candidate or publicly expressing personal political views while in uniform or on duty in the NYPD's patrol guide.

"Police Officers across the nation are advocating for TRUMP and rightfully so," the SBA, a police union, Tweeted. "The Democratic Party has abandoned police officers, encouraged violence and lawlessness. People are being murdered in Democratic run cities."

The president also linked to a Tweet from the Police Benevolent Association, the city's largest police union, who endorsed Trump themselves in August. The endorsement has brought the NYPD's impartiality into question in recent months.

The Flatbush incident unfolded Saturday after a man crossing the street near St. Paul's Place and Crooke Avenue flipped off the patrol car as he walked by because the vehicle was blocking the crosswalk, the man told reporter Talia Jane.

The cops and the man exchanged words until eventually the officer in the driver seat yelled "Trump 2020."

One of the videos was filmed by Eric Jenkins-Sahlin, a Brooklyn-based documentary film producer, who heard the incident from his apartment window.

Jenkins-Sahlin said he had his window open when he heard someone say "Trump 2020" over a loudspeaker, and walked over to film. His roommate, Brandon K. Hines, uploaded the 30-second clip on Twitter.

"My feeling is that this should concern everyone regardless of which politician you support, because no one should be subjected to having a heavily armed active-duty government employee tell them who to vote for," Jenkins-Sahlin said in an email. "That poses a serious threat to freedom and democracy."
