📰 News we're reading

1. 2 Legionnaires' Disease Cases Confirmed At Queens Apartment Complex (patch.com) — Queens residents at North Shore Towers are being alerted after two people there were diagnosed with Legionnaires' disease, though health officials say the wider community is not at risk. The city health department has not yet found Legionella bacteria in the building's water system, but the cases follow deadly outbreaks earlier this year in Manhattan and the Bronx.

2. NYC Health Department Vaccinating Raccoons Against Rabies This Week in Parts of Brooklyn, Queens, and Staten Island (nyc.gov) — If you live in Queens, you may see fish-scented rabies vaccine baits in local parks and wooded areas as the city vaccinates raccoons this week to protect residents and pets. Health officials urge you not to touch the baits, keep pets' rabies shots up to date, and call 311 if you spot sick or strangely behaving animals in your neighborhood.

3. NYCFC joins CM Thomas-Henry, AM Hooks to distribute almost 200 mattresses across Queens (qns.com) — Families and schools across Queens are receiving nearly 200 free mattresses and 500 rugs through a Giveback Day partnership between NYCFC, local elected officials, and community nonprofits. The donations, focused on neighborhoods like Elmhurst, Willets Point, Flushing and Corona, aim to ease financial strain on residents while making both homes and classrooms more comfortable and welcoming.

4. EHS fights stigma about mental health during suicide prevention event in Far Rockaway (qns.com) — A recent suicide-prevention walk at St. John's Episcopal Hospital in Far Rockaway brought together Queens residents, patients, and staff to confront stigma around mental health. With hundreds of Queens residents lost to suicide in recent years, EHS leaders stressed early help, shared practical coping tools, and invited neighbors to use their outpatient behavioral health services or call 988 in a crisis.

5. Man arrested on DUI charge in Queens (newportdispatch.com) — Queens drivers on the Grand Central Parkway should know that state police recently arrested a Manhattan man near Exit 8, accusing him of driving drunk with an infant in the car. The child was unharmed and released to family, while the driver now faces felony Leandra's Law and related charges after being processed at the 112th Precinct and Queens Central Booking.
