Here are the top stories in Queens today:
1. Con Edison has announced that it is halfway done with the Reliable Clean City project in Queens, a program that adds transmission lines and substations that aim to help the city transition into renewable energy systems. The project is expected to be finished in spring 2023 and will create transmission lines that provide renewable energy to customers from Long Island City to Corona, as well as partially install six miles of underground cable ducts. The endeavor is part of Con Ed's goal to deliver 100 percent clean power by 2040 to its customers.
2. Two ships carrying over 600 sailors, Marines, and Coast Guard have arrived in New York harbor to celebrate Veterans Day tomorrow, and to participate in memorial events through next week. The hundreds of servicemembers are in the city to attend the Veterans Day Parade, a wreath laying ceremony, the Giants salute to service game, and they will be volunteering at the New York State Veterans Home in Queens. The NY State Veterans Home is a 250-bed healthcare facility located in St. Albans, Queens, owned and operated by the New York State Department of Health for Veterans and their dependents.
3. Three Rikers Island correction officers were arrested on federal fraud charges after they pretending to be sick for more than a year while still obtaining their full salaries, the U.S. Attorney's Office said Thursday. Between 2021 and their Thursday arrests, Steven Cange, Monica Coaxum and Eduardo Trinidad allegedly faked illness by submitting false medical documentation. Cange, 49, claimed more than $160,000 in sick leave salary since March 2021, while Coaxum, 36, received more than $80,000 from March 2021 to May 2022, federal prosecutors said.
4. 48-year-old Myron Dukes, who was found fatally shot in the head in the backseat of a Range Rover after it crashed in Queens on Wednesday, was a convicted murderer and amateur historian who self-published a book earlier this year. Dukes, who lived in Bridgeport, Conn., self-published a book on the JFK assassination earlier this year, claiming in the book to have eyewitness accounts of the Kennedy shooting that had not been heard by the Warren Commission. He also theorized that people with racist ideologies were encouraged by Kennedy's murder to assassinate Martin Luther King, Malcolm X and Robert Kennedy, Jr. In 1992, Dukes was convicted in a "harebrained robbery scheme" turned fatal, and served over 20 years in prison. While there, Dukes became a de facto jailhouse lawyer, filing court papers seeking to have his conviction tossed, and suing Greenhaven Correctional Facility for denying his bid for parole.
