Flushing Town Hall Celebrates Mother’s Day with a Special Presentation of the Korean Chamber Opera From My Mother’s Mother

Flushing Town Hall celebrates Mother’s Day one day early this spring when it presents the Korean chamber opera, From My Mother’s Mother, on Saturday, May 13.

The opera is about a Korean tradition where Korean women, post- birth, are given seaweed soup, which is prepared by their mother and believed to assist in recovery. This story, composed by Jeeyoung Kim and libretto written by Janine Joseph, deals with love and reconciliation through one mother providing something to help her daughter, only to face rejection. The performance is in English with English and Korean subtitles.

Tickets to the presentation – which begins at 7:30 PM - can be purchased at www.flushingtownhall.org or by calling (718) 463-7700 x222. Prices are $10 each, or free for members, students, and mothers. Flushing Town Hall is accessible by car, bus, train and foot – located a short distance from the 7 train - at 137-35 Northern Blvd., in Flushing, Queens.

This season, Flushing Town Hall is opening its doors to teenagers – for FREE. Under the new “Teen Access Program”, all 13- to 19-year-old boys and girls (whether a member or not) will be welcomed to attend any performance for free. The program is designed to appeal to students and help foster a greater love in the arts and culture.

Open Mic: Mothers
THU, MAY 4, 2017, 6- 9 PM
Held the first Thursday of each month, Open Mic is for poets, storytellers, free style rappers, and emerging artists of all ages. Themes are suggested to inspire, but poems and stories performed need not follow the suggested theme. Hosted by poet and storyteller Bobby González.

My Mom, My Doll, and Me: Doll Making Workshop & Tea Party
SAT, MAY 6, 2 PM
$20/$18 Members + $10 doll-making kit
Dress in your teatime finery, bring your inner child, and create your own doll! Award-winning children’s author, illustrator, educator, and FTH Space Grantee, Timothy Bellavia leads this workshop for all ages, genders, and backgrounds, inspired by notable global mothers. It also includes a tea party with snacks, read aloud, book signings, and special red carpet photo-op. For ages 4 and up.
