1 Man Dies After Delivery Truck Overturns In Calverton: Police

The truck left the roadway and hit a utility pole and a large tree before overturning, police say.

CALVERTON, NY — A 41-year-old man died after a delivery truck overturned on Sound Avenue Saturday morning, police said.

At 9:58 a.m., a 911 call came in about a crash on Sound Avenue east of Edwards Avenue near the Baiting Hollow hill, Riverhead police said. The caller said that a large box truck appeared to have left the roadway, struck a utility pole, and overturned, police said.

Responding officers found a large cargo / box truck on the south side of the roadway on Sound Avenue, police said. A 31-year-old man from Brooklyn, who had been driving the truck, was able to exit the vehicle and appeared to have minor injuries, police said. He was transported from the scene via Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance Corps to Stony Brook University Hospital with non-life threatening injuries, police said.

The passenger, a 41-year-old man, also from Brooklyn, was pronounced dead at the scene by Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance paramedics, police said.

An investigation revealed that the truck had been traveling west on Sound Avenue and left the roadway, striking a LIPA utility pole and a large tree and then overturning, police said.

The Suffolk County Police Department's motor carrier section assisted at the scene, as did Suffolk County Police crime scene units, police said.

The vehicle involved is owned and operated by a third party delivery vendor subcontracted by P.C. Richard & Son and had been out making deliveries, police said.

The names of those involved are being withheld pending notification to next of kin, police said.
