It was originally reported that at least two people inside the apartment were suffering from gunshots wounds, police said. Officers located several individuals within and around the area of the apartment, and four people were transported to area hospitals with various injuries; two of the people found were not injured, police said.

A preliminary investigation conducted at the scene revealed that two armed subjects entered the apartment and multiple shots were fired from a long gun; however, none of the reported injuries appeared to be related to the gunfire, police said. A struggle between the intruders and the occupants of the apartment ensued and the injuries were sustained during that altercation, police said.

Riverhead Fire Department responded to the scene as well as Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance Corps, Flanders Ambulance, Westhampton Beach War Memorial Ambulance and Suffolk County aviation, police said.

The incident did not appear to be a random act; the occupants appeared to be the intended target of the incident, police said.
