"They need help with every basic need. Most importantly, they need a place to live."
RIVERHEAD, NY — The community is coming together to help two women who lost everything when a fire ripped through their Riverhead apartments recently.
The two women, Krystyna Borowska and Krystyna Zielinska, were displaced after a fire gutted the apartments where they were living in Riverhead on Jan. 24, officials said.
The fire broke out at 522 Pulaski Street just after 9 a.m., the Riverhead Volunteer Fire Department said. The Ridge Fire Department also responded to the scene, and the fire was extinguished by about 10:45 a.m.

No one was injured, but the women were left unable to return to their homes due to the damage, fire officials said. The Red Cross was at the scene to help them, officials said.
Bozena Mahmoud of Hampton Bays has created a GoFundMe page, "Krystyna Borowska and Krystyna Zielinska" for the women.

The women, "Polish elderly ladies . . . lost everything in a house fire that they were renting," and do not have insurance, Mahmoud said. "They both have been a part of the Polish community in Riverhead for a few decades now. The fire destroyed everything they owned, and they need help with every basic need — most importantly, they need a place to live."
