Fire Breaks Out In Trailers Behind Home Depot In Riverhead: Police

The store was closed for cleanup and for the removal of the trailers that caught fire, police say.

RIVERHEAD, NY — A fire broke out behind Home Depot in Riverhead Tuesday, sending plumes of dark smoke into the bright blue sky.

According to the Riverhead Police Department, the fire broke out at 12:56 p.m. at Home Depot on Old Country Road.

Upon arrival, officials saw that there was a trailer parked in the rear of the store that was fully engulfed in fire, police said.

The fire eventually spread to another trailer that was parked in the area, police said.

The Riverhead Volunteer Fire Department responded with multiple units to extinguish the fire; they were assisted by the Jamesport Fire Department, Flanders Fire Department, Wading River Fire Department, Ridge Fire Department, Westhampton Beach Fire Department, and Hampton Bays Fire Department, officials said.

The Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance Corps also responded in a stand-by capacity, police said.

The incident is currently under investigation by the Riverhead fire marshal's office and is believed to be non-criminal in nature, police said.

Home Depot is currently closed pending the clean up and removal of the trailers, police said.

A fire also broke out at the Riverhead Home Depot in 2022.
