Fire Breaks Out At Home Depot In Riverhead

RIVERHEAD, NY — Firefighters raced to Home Depot in Riverhead Monday after a fire sent smoke and flames billowing outside the building, leaving the front of the facade visibly damaged.

According to the Riverhead Volunteer Fire Department, the call came in about 12:30 p.m. about the blaze at the Home Depot on Old Country Road, which reportedly began with some chairs on fire outside.

Riverhead Town Police said upon arrival at the fire, a patrol supervisor determined that further investigation was needed. The Riverhead Town Police Department's detective squad, along with the Riverhead Town fire marshal and Suffolk County Police Department's arson squad responded, police said.

Authorities determined that the fire originated outside of the store in an area with lawn furniture for sale; the fire appeared to spread to the exterior of the building, causing extensive damage, police said.

At this time, the investigation is ongoing but it appears to be non-criminal in nature, police said.
