Calverton Welcomes First Rail Spur Train

The first train arrived this morning on a newly constructed rail spur that leads to Enterprise Park at Calverton. The trains carried several loads of ballast - crushed stone which provide support and protection for the railroad ties and tracks.

The short rail line is hoping to drive business to the EPCAL property by providing freight access off of the main line of the Long Island Rail Road. The old spur, which had become overgrown and unusable, was once used to ship materials at the former Grumman plant. The rail runs north up Connecticut Avenue and crosses River Road into EPCAL.

The project cost $3.4 million, and is being funded with a grant through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
