Car Stolen From Riverhead Gas Station: Police

The car was left running and unattended in the parking lot, police say.

RIVERHEAD, NY — A man was caught after stealing a car in Riverhead Thursday night and then driving while intoxicated, police said.

According to Riverhead Town police, the incident took place at 10:30 p.m. when authorities were notified of a vehicle stolen from the Speedway gas station on Old Country Road. The owner of the vehicle had left his vehicle running and unattended in the parking lot while he was inside shopping, police said.

Multiple police officers responded and found the vehicle within minutes at the 7-Eleven on Old Country Road, authorities said.

Albert Joseph Stepnoski, 50, of Riverhead, was arrested and charged with one count of fourth-degree criminal possession of stolen property, a felony; one count of aggravated driving while intoxicated; and one count of DWI, police said.

Stepnoski was transported to the Riverhead Police Department, processed and held for morning arraignment, police said.
