Carjacking Outside Tanger Store; Suspect Sought: Police

The man used physical force to remove the owner from the vehicle and then threatened them with a box cutter, police say.

RIVERHEAD, NY — Police are searching for the man they say was involved in a carjacking at Tanger Outlets in Riverhead Friday.

The incident took place at 3:48 p.m. outside the Banana Republic outlet store, Riverhead Town police said. A 2021 gray Kia Seltos was stolen when a man used physical force to remove the owner from the vehicle and then threatened them with a box cutter, police said.

The man then entered the running vehicle and fled westbound on the Long Island Expressway, police said. The last known location of the vehicle was believed to be in Queens at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, police said.

The man is described as Black, in his mid to late 20s, about 6-feet tall, with a slim build, short, curly black hair and a goatee; he was wearing a green vest over a gray hooded sweatshirt, gray sweatpants, and light-colored sneakers, police said.

The investigation is ongoing and anyone with information is asked to contact the Riverhead Police Department's detective division at 631-727-4500. All calls will be kept confidential.
