Dog Left Blind And Abandoned After Attack Needs Home; Shelter's Plea For Help

"Gizmo was rescued in horrific condition from a neighborhood of drugs and despair." — Pam Green, Kent Animal Shelter

RIVERHEAD, NY — A local shelter has reached out to help a dog who was attacked and left blind after being forced to live in a doghouse.

Pam Green, executive director of the Kent Animal Shelter in Riverhead, sent out an appeal to help the pup.

"Gizmo was rescued in horrific condition from a neighborhood of drugs and despair. He had been attacked by another dog that was trained for fighting. In the attack, he lost his left eye and his right eye was badly damaged, leaving him with little or no sight," she said.

Because of the trauma, Gizmo developed a condition, entropion, which caused the eyelid to turn in, causing the lashes to continually scratch the eye, Green said; Gizmo needed surgery to correct the condition and help end his pain.

"We're happy to report that Gizmo has had his special surgery, and he is in recovery. Please consider making a donation today for his special surgery and post op care," Green said.

The GoFundMe, "Please Help Gizmo," has raised $450 of its $1,500 goal.

"Gizmo is just six years old but in his short life, he has suffered a good deal of tragedy," the GoFundMe page said. "Gizmo was living in a dog house, believe it or not, being that he is so small. He was attacked by a pit bull that literally tore out his right eye."

Next, the hope is that Gizmo will find a loving forever home, placed for adoption with a family to care for him. He's a special needs dog, as he is blind, Green said.

"Would you or someone you know be able to adopt him?" she asked.
