'Erratic' Driver Refuses To Stop, Crashes Into Moving Truck: Police

He was charged with. criminal possession of stolen property, police say.

RIVERHEAD, NY — An "erratic" Medford driver was arrested in Riverhead early Saturday after he ran a red light, refused to stop for authorities, and crashed into a truck, police said.

According to Riverhead Town police, at 5:55 a.m., Arthur Cortes, 54, was seen driving a 2010 four-door Honda Civic sedan erratically as he headed west on East Main Street; he then ran a red light at the intersection of East Main Street and Roanoke Avenue and continued on to West Main Street, police said.

The officer attempted to initiate a traffic stop but Cortes refused, police said.

Cortes then pulled into the parking lot of a West Main Street moving company and hit a large moving truck, police said.

Cortes sustained minor injuries during the collision and was transported to Peconic Bay Medical Center by Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance Corps with non-life threatening injuries, police said. He was placed under arrest and following treatment, was taken to the Riverhead Police Department where he was charged with fourth-degree criminal possession of stolen property, as well as several vehicle and traffic violations, police said.

No further information was given by police about what property was stolen.
