Heat Wave Sparks Riverhead Water Restrictions for Residents
The Riverhead Water District is implementing an odd/even day lawn watering schedule, Supervisor Sean Walter said.

RIVERHEAD, NY — With temps expected to skyrocket over the next few days, Riverhead Town Supervisor Sean Walter is urging residents and business owners to conserve water.
To that end, the Riverhead Water District is implementing an odd/even day lawn watering schedule, Walter said.
“We are asking customers to reduce outdoor water usage to ensure our ability to meet demand,” Walter said. “Water use doubles during hot spells, sometimes overtaxing our production capability.”

The odd/even water schedule is effective immediately.
If an address ends in an even number, that person can water on even-numbered calendar days. If an address ends in an odd number, that person can water on odd numbered calendar days.

For example, if your address is 1400, you can water on the 2nd, 4th, 6th of the month. If your address is 1401, you can water of the 1st, 3rd, 5th, etc., Walter said.
Water district customers are also urged to refrain from watering their lawns between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. Watering early in the day or later at night conserves water, the supervisor said.
“I would like to thank the Riverhead Water District customers in advance for their cooperation and understanding of the need to alleviate our water demands by restricting non-essential water use,” Walter said.
