LI Driver Charged With DWI After Crash Into Tree Injures 4: Police
At least one of the people in the van sustained serious injuries and needed to be airlifted, police say.
RIVERHEAD, NY — An 18-year-old was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated after a single-car crash early Tuesday that left at least one of the five occupants seriously hurt, police said.
A 2007 Honda van crashed into a tree around 1:15 a.m. Tuesday on East Main Street, police said. The driver, Geobani David Cano, of Riverhead, was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated, police said. Cano was not hurt in the wreck.
Five people were inside the van at the time. The Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance Corps and Flanders-Northampton Volunteer Ambulance Corps responded. One person was seriously hurt and had to be airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital, police said.

Two passengers were taken to the same hospital by ambulance and one was taken to Peconic Bay Medical Center for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries, police said.
Cano was processed and held for arraignment, police said. Riverhead Town Police detectives and New York State Police commenced an investigation that is ongoing.
