LI Man Hits Another In Head With Hammer: Police

He fled on foot after the assault, police say.

RIVERHEAD, NY — A Riverhead man was arrested after he hit another man in the head with a hammer Sunday, police said.

According to Riverhead Town police, the incident took place at 10:43 p.m. at a men's shelter located on West Main Street. Resident Kurtis Eggers, 38, struck another resident in the head with a hammer, causing a non-life threatening injury, police said.

Eggers fled on foot after the assault, police said.

Members of Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance Corps Inc. treated the injured man, 52, at the scene, police said.

After an extensive search by the Riverhead Police Department's K-9 unit and patrol officers, Eggers was located and arrested; Eggers was charged with one count of second-degree assault and one count of third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, police said.

He was processed and held for arraignment, police said.
