LI Sanitation Worker Injured In Crash Between Garbage, Dump Trucks: PD

The crash took place Friday morning in Jamesport, police say.

JAMESPORT, NY — A sanitation worker was seriously injured during a crash between a garbage truck and a dump truck in Riverhead Friday morning, police said.

At 9:54 a.m., Riverhead Town police received a 911 call about the crash, which took place on Kirby Lane in Jamesport. The garbage truck had been going in reverse and heading south when it hit the parked dump truck, police said.

Javier Palma-Guevara, 25, who was riding on the garbage truck, suffered a serious leg injury in the collision, police said.

Police administered first aid; then, Palma-Guevara was airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital by Suffolk County Police aviation, police said.

The Riverhead Town Volunteer Ambulance Corps and the Jamesport Fire Department also responded.

The driver of the garbage truck, Juan Valencia, 50, of Brentwood stayed at the scene and cooperated with the investigation; there are no criminal charges pending at this time, police said.

The Suffolk County Police Department's crime scene unit and motor carrier unit, as well as the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, also assisted, police said.
