Lolly's Hut Serves Up A Taste Of Home

The small restaurant has stood the test of time on Route 58 in Riverhead.

Despite the massive surge of development on Route 58 in Riverhead, a small white building remains, its striped white and blue awning inviting loyal crowds of diners inside for a home-cooked meal and conversations with old friends.

For over 20 years, Lolly's Hut, a self-proclaimed snack bar that serves up "home-style cooking," has been a beacon for scores of hungry patrons searching for the kind of old-style eatery that offers comfort foods and hearty breakfasts and harkens back to a simpler time.

Loyal customers come from all across the East End to share breakfast and other home-cooked fare.

"I like the atmosphere," said Peggy Berkoski, who travels with her husband Ray from Hampton Bays regularly. "We see other people from Hampton Bays here all the time."

"It's a local hangout," said Cliff Johnson.

"And the food is good," Berkoski chimed in.

"I'm in love with Lolly," her husband joked.

Waitress Paula Smith, who has been working at Lolly's for over 20 years, said the business is so popular, it doesn't need to advertise. Patrons know, through word of mouth, how to find what some consider the best-kept secret in Riverhead.
