Man Charged After Shooting Burglar At His Long Island Home: Police

The burglar had broken into the man's shed twice, police say.

CALVERTON, NY — A Calverton man was arrested after shooting a burglar at his home, police said.

According to Riverhead Town Police, Donald Cheshire was arrested Friday after turning himself in relation to an incident that occurred on May 28 on River Road in Calverton.

Cheshire reported firing a warning shot with a shotgun at a burglar who had broken into his shed for a second time, police said.

An investigation determined that the burglar was actually struck by the gunfire and sustained non-life threatening injuries, police said.

Cheshire was charged with second degree assault, processed and arraigned in Riverhead Justice Court; the burglar will be charged at a later date, police said.

The burglar was transported to Stony Brook Hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries, police said.
