Man Charged With DWI After Crash Near Jail: Police

The intoxicated driver fled into the woods, police say.

RIVERSIDE, NY — A man was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated after a crash near the Suffolk County Correctional facility Friday, police said.

According to Southampton Town Police, the incident took place at 8:28 a.m. in the northbound lane of County Route 94, just north of the county jail. One of the drivers fled the area and headed into the woods, police said.

A deputy sheriff located the driver, Morgan Baltar, 21, of St. James, who had fled, police said. Baltar was arrested and charged with aggravated driving while intoxicated, a misdemeanor; driving while intoxicated, first offense, a misdemeanor; and unsafe passing and speed not reasonable and prudent, both violations, police said.

Baltar was transported to Southampton Town Police headquarters and brought to court for arraignment, police said.
