Man Charged With Stealing Woman's Bag From Car: Police
The key fob was left in the bag inside of the vehicle, affording the man entry, police say.
RIVERHEAD, NY — A man was charged Monday with stealing a woman's bag from her car, police said.
According to Riverhead police, at 2:48 p.m., officers were investigating a crash on Roanoke Avenue just south of Dunkin' Donuts. A passerby told an officer that a man had been seen looking into parked vehicles in the Dunkin' Donuts parking lot, police said.
Next, the investigating officer saw a man fitting the description walking with a woman’s pocketbook; the officer stopped the man and interviewed him, police said.

While they were talking, the woman who owned the purse approached and identified the bag as hers, police said.
The man, Anthony Robinson, 57, who had been residing in a Riverhead shelter, stole the pocketbook, which contained credit cards and a key fob, from the woman's vehicle, police said. He was able to enter the vehicle because the woman had left her key fob in her purse inside, police said.

Robinson, who initially lied about his identity, was arrested and charged with third-degree criminal possession of stolen property; fourth-degree criminal possession of stolen property; and false impersonation, police said.
Robinson was processed held for arraignment, police said.
