"These were brazen acts committed in broad daylight by an individual who clearly has no respect for the law." — DA Tim Sini.

RIVERHEAD, NY — A man was indicted Thursday after committing 10 burglaries at homes in Riverhead from 2017 to 2018, Suffolk County District Attorney Tim Sini said.

Taiheem McKay, 23, of Riverhead, was charged with 10 counts of second degree burglary, a felony, police said.

“This indictment is the result of excellent investigative work by detectives in the Riverhead Police Department, who used technology and the sharing of intelligence to find the alleged perpetrator responsible for these burglaries,” Sini said. “These were brazen acts committed in broad daylight by an individual who clearly has no respect for the law. I commend the Riverhead Police Department and the Suffolk County Department of Probation for their work on this case and their continuous efforts to keep our communities safe.”

McKay was charged in connection with the following burglaries, all in Riverhead, police said: July 11, 2017, on East Avenue; July 11, 2017, on East Avenue; Sept. 1, 2017, on Horton Avenue; Sept. 1, 2017, on Old Country Road; Jan. 18, 2018 on East Avenue; Jan. 29, 2018 on East Avenue; Jan. 29, 2018, at on East Avenue; Feb. 12, 2018, on Raynor Avenue; Feb. 27, 2018, on Maple Avenue; and Feb. 27, 2018, on Union Avenue, police said.

McKay is currently serving a sentence of probation, the conditions of which require him to wear a GPS ankle monitor; through an investigation by the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office, Riverhead Police Department and Suffolk County Department of Probation, McKay was found to have been at each of the burglary locations on the days of the incidents, Sini explained

McKay allegedly stole U.S. currency, jewelry, designer sneakers, designer belts and a wallet from the residences, Sini said.

If convicted, McKay faces a maximum sentence of five to 15 years in prison on each count of the indictment, which could run consecutively, Sini said.

McKay was also arrested by the Riverhead Police Department on July 16 in connection with a residential burglary on East Avenue in Riverhead on May 4 during which he stole several hundred dollars from the residence, Sini said. He was indicted on July 26 on charges of second degree burglary, a felony, and fourth degree criminal mischief, a misdemeanor, in connection with that incident, Sini said.

He is due back in court on Oct. 2.

This case is being prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Kimberly Shalvey of the Major Crime Bureau.
