Man Soaked In Blood, Critically Hurt After Riverhead Stabbing: Police

The man who stabbed him in Riverhead was found with a large kitchen knife, also covered in blood, police say.

RIVERHEAD, NY — A Riverhead man was critically injured after he was stabbed during a dispute Monday, police said.

According to Riverhead Police, the incident took place at 10:45 p.m. on Griffing Avenue and West Main Street; one man was seen chasing the other, police said.

The man being chased was bleeding, his shirt soaked in blood, police said. He crossed the street and then collapsed to the ground on West Main Street, police said.

The man running after him changed directions and began to run from the area, heading west on West Main Street, while the officer gave chase, police said.

Ronald Dejesus Oscal Cruz, 29, of Riverhead, was apprehended a short distance away on West Main Street and was found to be in possession of a large kitchen knife that was covered in blood, police said. He was arrested and charged with first-degree assault and fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon and held for arraignment, police said.

Police found the 36-year-old with multiple stab wounds on West Main Street and rendered first aide; Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance Corps took him to Peconic Bay Medical Center with life-threatening injuries, police said. Upon arrival at PBMC, he underwent emergency surgery to stabilize his injuries; he remains in intensive care in critical condition, police said.
