Man Trying To Break Into LI Home Shot By Off-Duty Deputy Sheriff: PD

RIVERHEAD, NY — A man trying to break into a Riverhead home Wednesday was shot by an 0ff-duty Suffolk County deputy sheriff, police said.

The man attempted to break into the Maple Wood Lane residence at about 4 p.m and was confronted by residents who tried to stop him from entering, Suffolk County police said.

The man continued to attempt to enter the home and was shot once by the homeowner, an off duty Suffolk County deputy sheriff, police said.

The man was taken to an area hospital for treatment, police said.
