Assemblyman-elect Anthony Palumbo (R,C- New Suffolk) today is encouraging local residents to re-apply for the STAR Property Tax Exemption program. The program, which was restructured in this year’s budget to eliminate waste, fraud and abuse, saves the average Suffolk County resident $900 per year, but many homeowners still have not renewed their exemption. The deadline to apply to receive the exemption on this year’s tax bill is December 31.
“As a fellow homeowner, I know the heavy property tax burden we face on the East End. The STAR Property Tax Exemption can provide qualified residents with meaningful relief,” said Palumbo. “As Suffolk County residents continue to face high property taxes, this $900 is positive, yet small step toward relief. As your assemblyman, I will fight to double this amount and to further expand the relief local homeowners receive from the STAR program. However, with the deadline quickly approaching it is important that applications are filed with the Department of Taxation and Finance so residents get the relief they deserve.”
