A Flanders man is accused of brutally assaulting his pregnant girlfriend on Monday morning, forcing the woman into emergency surgery to save the life of her unborn child.

According to Southampton Town Police, the woman, who was 7-months pregnant, arrived at Peconic Bay Medical Center at about 10:30 a.m. Monday and was immediately rushed into surgery.

A baby girl was delivered and the newborn was transported to Stony Brook University Hospital, where she is listed in critical condition, police said.

The mother, who police did not identify, suffered extensive life-threatening injuries in the assault, police said. She remains hospitalized and is listed in serious condition.

Police say they searched for the woman’s boyfriend, 38-year-old Mohammed Proctor, and found him hiding in his Flanders home with his 19-month-old son, police said.

Proctor was charged with first degree assault and strangulation, police said. His son was unharmed.

Proctor was held overnight and brought to Southampton Town Justice Court, where he was remanded to the county jail without bail.

The investigation is continuing and detectives ask anyone with information to contact the Southampton Town Detectives at 631-702-2230.

Proctor was arrested in 2010 for possession of drugs and weapons by members of the Southampton Town Street Crimes Unit, who entered his Riverside home with a search warrant, according to a report in 27east.

He was released from prison in 2013 after it was revealed that the unit used “questionable practices,” including conducting an allegedly illegal body cavity search to find a bag of cocaine in his rectum, according to the report.

Proctor then filed a $50 million lawsuit against the police for excessive force, which was dismissed in U.S. District Court, according to 27east.
