Riverhead Borders Put on the Chopping Block

Riverhead location listed as one of 51 offered up as bankruptcy financing condition.

Borders Group, Inc., the parent company of Borders books and music retailers, initiated a process to close 51 stores – the being one of them – to fulfill a bankruptcy requirement. 

A spokeswoman said she actually expected a "far smaller number to actually close."

Borders Group, Inc. filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy in the middle of February. The Commack location was recently closed.

Stef Goodsdale, a spokeswoman for the Borders Group, said that the company is "working as hard as we can to renegotiate as many of the leases as possible."

A manager at the Riverhead location, Constantine Stavrakos, referred questions to corporate public relations.
