🌱 Riverhead Daily: Habitat Gift + Peconic Scallops + Hyperlight

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Riverhead.

(Riverhead Daily)

Happy Friday, neighbors! Diane Witek here to get you all caught up to start today off on an informed note.

First, today's weather:

Clouds and sun; not as cool. High: 59, low: 40.

Here are the top stories in Riverhead today:

  1. Riverhead High School will soon take over the lease for the portable building next to the school, which formerly housed the offices of Quannacut Eastern Long Island Hospital, and revert it to classroom use; eight in all. "The Board of Education Tuesday night unanimously authorized a five-year lease of the premises, with an option to renew for another five-year term, at a starting base rent of $12,917 per month ($155,000 per year) which will increase 2 percent each year of the term." (RiverheadLOCAL)
  2. Who doesn't love Long Island seafood? Among other things, it is what Long Island is known for, especially Peconic Bay scallops. The scallops are making a late-season comeback with just a week remaining in the harvest. Expect to pay top dollar for them, seafood shops from Hampton Bays to Southhold have been offering the local scallops for sale in recent weeks, at prices ranging from $35 to $48 a pound. 3. What do you think of when you hear the word Hyperlight? It is a reimagined ride at Splish Splash water park in Calverton. "According to park officials, riders can choose between two dueling slides that offer up to four different light and sound experiences. After boarding your tube, you'll fly through an all-sensory display of vivid light and dynamic sound that a spokesperson said 'will make thrill-seekers feel like they have been transported to another dimension.'" (Northforker)
  4. We all remember the famous split between Jeff Bezos and his wife MacKenzie Scott, but what we didn't know is how the world would benefit from the breakup. In 2019, Scott pledged to give away most of her fortune, and Habitat International is her latest benefactor of a $3.75M donation. The Habitat for Humanity of Suffolk builds low-cost homes in the county, making homeownership attainable for Long Island families who could otherwise not afford it, and runs a thrift shop of furniture and building materials called ReStore in Ronkonkoma.
