Riverhead School District Speaks Out On Safety After Shooting

"The safety of students is our number one priority."

RIVERHEAD, NY — Riverhead School District administrators are setting out to assuage fears of concerned parents after 17 people were shot and killed and numerous others injured Wednesday when a former student opened fire in a horrific act of mass violence at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, FL.

Riverhead Central School District Superintendent Dr. Aurelia L. Henriquez sent out a message in regard to safety: "Following the tragic and unthinkable act of violence that occurred in Florida earlier this week, our thoughts and condolences are extended to the family and friends of the victims at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School," she wrote.

She assured parents that "the safety of our students is our number one priority and are schools are equipped with a comprehensive crisis plan to guide us through a variety of emergency situations, should the need arise."

The plans are reviewed, with the help of local law enforcement, annually — and updated as needed, Henriquez said.

Safety drills are conducted throughout the year to prepare students and staff in the event of an emergency, and professional development is also conducted annually, Henriquez said. Social workers are also available, as well as guidance counselors, and school psychologists, to help students who are having difficulty "dealing with this terrible tragedy," she said.
