Riverhead Students Attend Academic Competition

The competition took place on March 31.

Riverhead students recently attended the annual Certamen, a strictly academic, brain-powered competition on all things Ancient Roman.

This year’s event was the biggest and best-attended in the event’s history.

Sixteen schools from Suffolk to Queens sent their best Latin scholars to SUNY Stony Brook on March 31 for the head-to-head contest in the fine points of Latin grammar, syntax and vocabulary, and the endless details of ancient history, mythology and classical civilization.

The Riverhead team took three of the day’s total dozen prizes – just behind rival Port Jefferson’s four.

The Blue Wave Latinists won first place at the Middle School level, and received third place in both the Level 2 and Advanced brackets.
