Rollover Accident in Riverhead Leaves Elderly Couple Injured

Police are asking motorists to find alternate routes including Sound Avenue and Route 25.

RIVERHEAD, NY - Update: 10:30 p.m. Riverhead Police said a woman, 82, was operating a 2008 Ford Focus and heading west on County Road 58 near Apple Honda when the vehicle left the roadway at 4:54 p.m. The vehicle struck a guard rail and overturned, coming to rest on its roof, police said. The woman and her male passenger, 82, were transported to Stony Brook University Hospital for treatment of their injuries. The Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance Corps and the Riverhead Fire Department also responded to the scene. The involved vehicle was impounded to conduct a safety check. County Road 58 was closed to conduct the accident investigation and reopened at 6:48 p.m. Wednesday night.

Original story: A rollover accident on Route 58 and Osborn Avenue in Riverhead has left at least one person injured, police said.

According to Riverhead Town Police, the accident, which took place at approximately 5 p.m., closed Route 58 in both directions. Motorists are asked to find alternate routes on Sound Avenue and Route 25, police said.

Scanner reports that the person injured was unresponsive and not breathing could not be immediately confirmed by police. Police did confirm that EMTs at the scene were treating at least one individual.
