Sunday's Snowstorm Leads To 120 Crashes On County Roads Across LI: PD

Sleet on Sunday afternoon and frosty temperatures will lead to icy roads and dangerous conditions for the Monday commute, officials say.

LONG ISLAND, NY — Sunday's snowstorm, which brought up to about a foot of snow in some locations across Long Island, led to dozens of crashes on county roads, officials said.

According to Suffolk County Police, between the hours of midnight and 11:15 p.m., there were about 80 crashes in the SCPD jurisdiction, one with life-threatening injuries.

In Nassau County, from 6 a.m. to 6 p..m., there were 40 reported crashes, police said.

On the East End, police reported minor crashes.

"Some vehicles off the roadway, more so than crashes," said Ryan Murphy, Southampton Town code compliance and emergency management administrator. "More slips and slides off into snow and sides of the roads in places."

Southold Town Police Chief Steve Grattan added that there had been "a couple of minor accidents. Thankfully, it was a very quiet day."

As snow tapered off and sleet began, the National Weather Service warned of a layer of ice expected to coat Long Island Roadways Sunday night into Monday that could make travel treacherous for motorists.

"The challenge is going to be the sleet and freezing rain," said Joe Pollina, meteorologist with the NWS office in Upton, earlier this week. "We're going to see almost a foot of snow and then, sleet and possibly freezing rain on top of that, adding another layer of ice. It's going to be slicker than just the snow."

Residents, the NWS said, should expect "lingering significant travel impacts likely for the Monday morning commute, possibly into the Monday afternoon/evening commute."
