Young Scientists Make District Proud

Congratulations to Riverhead High School sophomores Alex Garcia and Amanda Ribeiro.

RIVERHEAD, NY — Two young scientists have made their school district proud.

Riverhead High School sophomores Alex Garcia and Amanda Ribeiro recently participated in Brookhaven National Laboratory’s 27th annual Partners in Science program.

Garcia and Ribeiro, a release from the district said, toured the National Synchrotron Light Source II at the lab and learned about other research taking place at the facility, including studies related to nano photos and X-rays.

BNL scientist Lisa Miller, a biophysical chemist who is studying the chemical makeup of cells and tissues using synchrotron-based infrared and X-ray imaging, shared insight with the teens.

Following Miller’s presentation, the students were able to speak one-on-one with BNL scientists about science research projects they are working on.

Science teacher Lance Mio and library media specialist Kim McGurk accompanied the students, who were chosen, according to McGurk, because they “exemplified the spirit of the BNL Program.”
