2 Men Rescued from Hudson River After Sailboat Capsizes

Police said the men aided in their own rescue by taking safety precautions before they set sail.

Irvington, NY — Two people were rescued from the Hudson River Wednesday after their sailboat capsized near Irvington.

Kieran O’Leary, spokesman for the Westchester County Police Marine Unit, said the incident began at 4:22 p.m. when two men transmitted a distress call over a U.S. Coast Guard marine radio channel.

They reported that their sailboat had capsized and they were in the water.

A police marine unit heard the call and proceeded south on the Hudson River from their position near the Tappan Zee Bridge.

When they arrived on the scene, officers saw the two men, who were both around 30 years old, clinging to the side of the capsized vessel, opposite the Ardsley railroad station.

The men—one from Dobbs Ferry and one from New Jersey—were wearing life vests.

They were pulled from the river and were able to keep their 16-foot Hobie Cat sailboat from sinking.

The officers took the two men back to Dobbs Ferry and towed the vessel back at the same time.

Neither man was injured and both declined medical attention.

O’Leary said the safety precautions the two men took before setting sail played a significant role in their rescue, including having a working radio and wearing life vests.

“This successful outcome is a good reminder to all boaters to carry proper safety equipment and always were life vests when out on the water,” he said.
