Westchester County District Attorney Susan Cacace announced that 55-year-old John Singh, of Yonkers, was convicted on Friday of felony second-degree murder, and felony first-degree manslaughter for stabbing his brother-in-law, 78-year-old Bernard Barua, of Yonkers, to death in 2024.

"Bernard Barua's life mattered. When the defendant stabbed him to death, he forever changed the course of both of their lives," DA Cacace said. "Today, Mr. Singh was finally held accountable for his depraved conduct, and we will seek to ensure that he spends decades in prison. I would like to commend the jury for their thoughtful examination of this case. May Mr. Barua forever rest in peace."
On Nov. 16, 2024, around 1:30 p.m., Yonkers Police Department officers responded to an apartment inside 760 Bronx River Road, after receiving a report of a stabbing.
Police found a man with a stab wound to his chest, at the entrance to an apartment inside the building. He told police that he had been stabbed in the chest by his brother-in-law.
When officers entered the apartment, they found a second man lying unresponsive in bed with a stab wound to the chest.
Police administered first aid and rushed both men to the hospital.
Major Case Squad detectives, along with the Digital Forensics and Crime Scene Units, headed to the scene and started an investigation.
Investigators believe Barua and Singh were alone in the apartment at the time of the incident, during which both received stab wounds to the chest.
Singh received treatment for his injury, while Barua later died from his injuries at the hospital.
